Palomino, Colombia
After an unforgettable New Year’s celebration in Medellín, Palomino, Colombia, was the next stop on my month-and-a-half backpacking adventure. Arriving here felt like stepping into a dream. After a quick flight to Santa Marta, I, alongside my three fellow travelers, hopped on a bus along the coastline, weaving through the stunning Sierra Nevada and the lush landscapes of Tayrona National Park. The two-hour ride set the perfect tone for what was to come in this tropical oasis.
The hostel scene in Palomino is vibrant and chaotic in the best way. After trying a few places, Jaba Jan emerged as my favorite. It’s not just the incredible activities that drew me in; it’s the atmosphere. Every day felt fresh, with opportunities to connect with other travelers over shared meals or spontaneous group outings. The private beach is a true highlight, providing a peaceful retreat where I could unwind and soak up the sun. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re part of a community, yet still have space to breathe and enjoy the beauty around you.
For those seeking tranquility, Freesoul is the go-to for yoga and dance classes that invite you to reconnect. Meanwhile, Dreamer Hostel pulses with energy as the lively hub where travelers gather, sharing stories and engaging in friendly pool matches over refreshing drinks. If you’re looking for a fun night out, Maria Mulata is renowned for its XL cocktails and electrifying techno street parties. Beach Life Hostel, with its beach parties, can be quite loud, making it better suited for a quick drink and dance rather than a peaceful retreat.
Palomino offers more than just great beaches; it’s also a hotspot for fresh, local flavors. Along the shore, you’ll find incredible pescado frito served with crispy patacones (fried green plantains) and freshly made empanadas. The town is also a paradise for fresh coconut and fruit juice lovers—you can easily grab a refreshing drink while wandering between surf shops and jewelry stands. Whether you’re looking for a light snack or a full meal, Palomino’s beachside eateries deliver a truly authentic taste of Colombia.
One of the unforgettable moments in Palomino was tubing down the Rio Palomino. It all starts with a bumpy car ride that shakes you awake, the mountains and jungle blurring together as you climb higher. At the riverbank, a rope dangles from the trees, and without hesitation, you grab hold and swing into the cool water, a Tarzan-like plunge into the heart of nature. From there, the river does the rest—slowly pulling you along, through lush greenery, the soundtrack of the jungle in the background. The ride ends where the river meets the ocean, merging two worlds as you step from freshwater onto the golden coast, a seamless end to a wild, beautiful ride.
The beach was calling, too. I rented a surfboard and hit the waves. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or just getting started, the ocean here is inviting, offering the perfect mix of fun and challenge. The rhythm of the waves and the endless horizon make it hard to resist staying out there for hours.
After my time in the ocean, I wandered along the coastline, where local artisans had set up stalls filled with handcrafted jewelry. Each piece felt like a reflection of Palomino’s vibrant spirit. I spent hours sifting through delicate necklaces, bracelets, and rings, picking out little treasures to take home—each one a memory of this unforgettable place.
Palomino’s main street is the heart of the town, a lively yet laid-back stretch where everything happens. At the beginning of the road, there’s one small supermarket—your go-to for basics. As you wander further down, the street is lined with small shops, many selling fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s a simple but vibrant scene, with the scent of tropical fruit filling the air and locals chatting by their stands. Whether you’re grabbing a snack or stocking up for a beach day, this street has a charm that pulls you in.
Palomino is small, but its charm lies in its simplicity. While it may not offer endless new discoveries, it’s the perfect spot to slow down, unwind, and enjoy life’s little pleasures—whether it’s a quiet afternoon by the beach, sipping fresh coconut water, or chatting with locals at the market. There’s a sense of ease that makes it feel like a well-deserved break from the busier parts of the world.
After Palomino, I continued my journey along the Santa Marta coast, heading to my next stop: Costeño Beach. Known for its lively surf culture and vibrant backpacker scene, Costeño was a perfect follow-up—keeping the energy high with a mix of beachside activities and stunning ocean views.
